Beyonce got her start singing in church, and a San Francisco house of worship just said thanks -- by holding a mass built around the music of Mrs. Carter.
Grace Cathedral drew more than 900 people to a special Bey-themed mass on Wednesday night, which is more than twice the usual turnout for the weeknight service. The idea sprang from a class called “Beyoncé and the Hebrew Bible," which is taught at the nearby San Francisco Theological Seminary.
The mass mixed tradition with pop culture, with Bible readings from the book of Luke and Psalms followed by the Beyoncé songs “Freedom” and “Flaws and All.” Reverend Yolanda Norton, who came up with the idea, told the San Francisco Chronicle “When we talk about womanist biblical interpretation, Beyoncé felt like a natural fit."
