2021 is not starting off to a good start. Legendary and beloved actress has sadly passed away today (Thursday) at the age of 96.
Her longtime manager Larry Thompson told Variety "“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each was a privilege and blessing,” Thompson wrote in a statement. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.”
Tyson had a long storied career in Hollywood, first starting as a model and then moving on to the big screen. In 1974 she became the first Black actress to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Television movie for her role in "The Autobiography of Miss jane Pittman."
She was a star on Broadway as well, winning a Tony for her performance in "The Trip to Bountiful."
Tyson would go on to be married to legendary Jazz Musician Miles Davis from 1981 to 1988.
Tyson did not have any children but she is survived by her niece, Cathy Tyson.
