California will end its indoor mask requirement for vaccinated people next week, but masks still are the rule for schoolchildren, state health officials announced Monday amid rapidly falling coronavirus cases.

State officials also announced that Indoor “mega-events” with more than 1,000 people will have to require vaccinations or negative tests for those attending and those who are unvaccinated will be required to wear masks. For outdoor events with more than 10,000 people, there is no vaccination requirement but masks or negative tests are recommended.

California workers who had to miss work because they or a loved one caught COVID-19 this year will be able to get at least 40 hours of paid sick leave under a bill passed by the state Legislature on Monday. The bill applies to anyone at a company with more than 26 employees and covers the time taken off between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30.

Team USA figure skater and Palo Alto native Vincent Zhou posted an emotional video explaining that he will be leaving the Beijing Olympics after he tested positive for COVID. The Nike-sponsored athlete tearfully addressed his younger self in the video, saying he would be extremely proud to see himself competing in the Olympics at 21. “You lived out your dreams,” Zhou said. “You became the person you always aspired to be.” Zhou rehashed long nights spent on the couch as a child, studying the jumps of great figure skaters and dreaming about joining their ranks someday while waking up at 4 a.m. to practice in the rink.

We can't wait to see you back at the Olympics Vincent!!
