Ngari Institute’s Sand Mandala Tour in Sacramento The Ngari Institute monks are in Sacramento this month as part of a greater Sand Mandala Tour promoting peace, healing, and cultural exchange. Sacramento is one of many cities included on their journey across the United States to share their sacred art and message of compassion. The Ngari Institute is a Buddhist temple and school located in the Himalayan region near Leh, Ladakh, and is endorsed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Their mission is to care for children in the region who might not otherwise have access to a Western education while at the same time preserving their Buddhist culture and religion. They are currently creating a Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala at Lion’s Roar Dharma Center, a sacred symbol dedicated to healing, wisdom, and compassion. Each grain of sand is placed as a prayer for the well-being of all beings. Every morning the center opens with mantra at 10 am. Then at 6 pm it closes with mantra. The room is alive with the sounds of ancient horns and cymbals Last week, the monks were hosted by Yoga Creatives, where owner Yoga teacher Christine Keeley and the Granite Bay community shared in the creation of a Tara Mandala a joyful and heart-opening experience that brought people together through beauty, mindfulness, and devotion. Through their journey, the monks bring their healing mandalas to churches, temples, yoga studios, art spaces, and Jewish centers, offering their sacred art as a bridge between people of all faiths and backgrounds. The monks are now being hosted by Lion’s Roar Dharma Center, which shares a deep commitment to peaceful dialogue between diverse communities. At Lion’s Roar, peace is the way — through understanding. The arts are celebrated as a bridge between what divides us, reminding us that creativity and beauty open hearts. Each month, Lion’s Roar opens its doors to the greater community through an event called Expressions, a celebration of the arts that uplifts and unites. The monks, too, use sacred art to open doors and invite everyone to come by and share this sacred time with them. In the end, their message is simple and clear: Love and compassion are the answer.
