SAFE Credit Union's VALOR Program Takes Care of Worn Flags Properly

SAFE Credit Union VALOR leader Christopher Rhodes sorts through flags during the employee resource group’s flag collection folding volunteer event.

  • SAFE Credit Union wrapped up its employee-led 2nd Annual flag drive Wednesday (Aug. 6) – collecting nearly 540 flags in total this summer. Last year they collected 300.

  • More than 60 SAFE employee volunteers folded 206 old, worn and sometimes damaged flags to prepare them for proper retirement – in about an hour. The volunteer event was held at SAFE Credit Union’s headquarters in Folsom. Employees sorted flags and worked in teams to make sure the flags were folded correctly.

  • VALOR, SAFE’s employee resource group VALOR (Veterans and Loved Ones Resource), also held a flag folding event in June at the VFW 6604 in Folsom where they folded 180 that day.

  • This year, VALOR invited the community to bring aging and worn flags to its 17 branches in the Greater Sacramento area, its headquarters in Folsom, and at the Aerospace Museum of California. The drive ran from Memorial Day weekend through July 30.

  • VALOR is forwarding the collected flags to  Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6604 in Folsom who assists in readying the flags to be then given to the American Legion Post 362 also in Folsom. The American Legion is expected to retire the flags as well as distribute many to area Golden Empire Council Scouting Troops. Both the legion and Scouts conduct and arrange retirement ceremonies in adherence to the U.S. Flag Code.
