Nipsey Hussle Inspires Black Men To Read #TheMarathonContinues

The Marathon Continues for a group of men who decided to create a book club inspired by the late Nipsey Hussle. The Marathon Book Club formed after a fan in Wisconsin tweeted a list of Hussle’s favorite books and the meme list went viral.

Almost a year later there are over 70 members – including professors, entrepreneurs, executives, and bankers – meeting up monthly in Los Angeles, Oakland,New York, and Washington, DC. Rashad Drakeford, book club founder, says the meetings also create a safe place for Black men to be vulnerable and have honest conversations about their personal struggles.

“It used to be how tough you are and how many women you could bag,” Drakeford said. “It’s okay to talk about issues, [to] be vulnerable and fail. That’s the true essence of manhood.Seeing brothers talking about the journey while they are in it makes you realize, ‘I’m not alone in this – I’m feeling the same thing.’”
