Sixth-Grader Raises $10K To Pay Off Student Lunch Debt #GoodNews

An elementary school student in Spokane, Washington wanted to find a way to help her fellow students who were behind on their school lunch payments.

Lilly Cowart, a sixth grader, talked to her dad about how they could help pay down the balances owed by local families, but when he found out how much was owed, dad was discouraged.

But Lilly wasn’t giving up. Her determination encouraged her dad, Andrew Cowart to find a way to make a difference and as a car sales manager, he enlisted help from his team. They pitched in, donating a portion of their car sales to the fund. Soon Lilly had $10,000, which she and her father just donated to the Spokane School District’s benevolence fund.

Their generosity will help about 1,000 families maintain their accounts for the year. Lilly is delighted with the results and says, "it just makes my heart happy.”
