Over the last eight years,Ben Birdhas gotten to know some of the customers on his trash pickup route. The garbage man saysDorothy “Mercy” Ballard’sis his “favorite lady” and he loves to stop for a chat with her and that she makes him laugh every week. So when she recently turned 100, he had something special planned.
Bird and his colleagues surprised Ballard by bringing her a birthday cake, topped with three lit candles. The men even sang to her and waited for her to blow them out. When she couldn’t think of what to wish for, Bird suggested “105,” and the birthday girl jokingly told him to “Shut up!” in the sweet way only grandmas can.
