Entire School Community Learns ASL to Welcome First Deaf Student #GoodNews

Students at a Maine elementary school have welcomed a special new student with open arms and expressive hand movements.

A hearing-impaired six-year-old girl namedย Morie Belanger recently started attendingย Dayton Consolidated School and her classmates immediately went the extra mile to make her fit right in.ย

The students and faculty have been taking the time to learn American Sign Language so that they could communicate with their new friend.

Posters have been placed around the school teaching a different sign and students have already learned up to 20 different words.ย

The school has alsoย installed a hearing assistive system in an effort to make their classes more deaf-friendly.

School principal Kimberley Sampietro says, โ€œMorey,ย without even knowing it,ย has taught us so much. She has brought a culture to our building that we didnโ€™t have before.โ€
