Former Homeless Student Graduates from Georgetown University #GoodNews

Recent Georgetown University graduateRashema Melsonis an amazing example of not letting your circumstances determine your success. According Melson, her “life has always been rough” due to lack of resources in Southwest D.C.

From being homeless most of high school, constantly moving to different shelters, to worrying about her next meal – yet she still managed to excel academically. “I knew that education was the only way out. I knew I [needed] to get my work done” Melson said. “Reading books gave me an insight into a world that I have never ever seen in my life – People really get rich and buy a house? People really get their dream jobs? It was like a fantasy land to me.”

Well, she’s on the right track to making that fantasy her reality. In high school she maintained straight A’s and became the senior class valedictorian at Anacostia High. Which landed her a full scholarship to Georgetown University. Melson received her bachelor’s degree in justice and peace studies and her education journey isn’t over yet.
