VALENTINE'S DAY: You're Better Off Eating at the House

Valentine's Day is the second busiest dayof the year for restaurants. (Mother's Day is number one.) But according to the food experts at Bon Appetitmagazine, you’re better off eating at home than going to dinner tonight. Here's why:

  • The menus and the prices stink: It’s one of the busiest nights of the year for restaurants and they want to turn as many tables as they can. That means you’ll be rushed, there will likely be a fixed menu with few choices and the prices will be much higher than usual.
  • It’s not really that romantic: You’ll be squished into a crowded and loud restaurant with a lot of other couples trying to force a romantic ambiance. If you want candlelight, soft music and quiet conversation, you can get that with a romantic dinner at home.
  • Booze costs a lot less at home:Restaurants sell a lot of over-priced champagne on the day of love. You can get better and cheaper wine and champagne at the store and enjoy it at home.
  • You can cook something you really want: You don’t have to be a great chef to come up with a nice meal. Better yet -- cook a meal together. It’s fun and incredibly romantic.
